Gareth’s story: Rediscovering confidence after spinal cord injury
25 November 2025

Meet Gareth:
I’m 68 and a proud grandfather of six. Before my accident, I ran a marine civil engineering business, spent years as a diver, and lived a busy, active life. One night, I came home after work, stumbled on the stairs, and fell 10ft. The result was devastating: a complete spinal break, broken ribs, and a shattered shoulder. I was in hospital for three months.
When they told me I’d never walk again, it was a huge blow, and I quickly knew that life was never going to be the same again. I needed help with basic things like washing and going to the toilet. Those early weeks in hospital were tough.
My family, especially the grandkids, kept me going. Their support has been absolutely superb. My wife adapted our home before I even left hospital – ramps, a wet room, everything I needed. There was even a van with hand controls waiting for me when I got home! Ten days after discharge, I passed my test and was back on the road. That independence was huge.
I first met Back Up in hospital. Helen, one of their team, came onto the ward – young, full of life, and in a chair herself. Seeing how she lived gave me perspective. She told me about a City Skills course in Cardiff, and though I had doubts, I signed up. I’m glad I did.

The course changed everything. I learned practical wheelchair skills – pushing myself around Cardiff Bay, managing curbs, and handling everyday obstacles. It built my confidence to get out on my own. It was also great meeting others with spinal cord injuries. We shared tips on everything from travelling abroad, to getting back into work, to managing day-to-day life.
Since then, I’ve been pushing myself in new ways – cutting the grass with adapted kit, planning to get back into the water diving, and even flying abroad with friends. Back Up didn’t just teach me skills; they connected me to a community that understands. That makes all the difference. They’ve given me the confidence to live life on my own terms.
Please support our 2025 Christmas Appeal and help more people like Gareth believe in what’s possible after spinal cord injury.
