Skills for Independence

Date: Monday 19 - Friday 23 Aug 2024
Location: Leeds

“I feel so positive it’s ridiculous. On the way there I had no confidence, I was thinking to myself, I can’t do it. I had no self-esteem. It was honestly amazing.”

This course is all about you and the skills that would improve your independence. What do you want to learn? The aim of this course is to give you the confidence you need to lead a more independent and active life.

There will be a dedicated skills trainer per two participants who will be a similar level and ability to you. They will work out with you what you want to achieve before the course, and give you some new ideas that you may not have thought of before.

Over the week, we will help you refine those skills whether it’s having a bath, using public transport, getting dressed, transferring into a car, going up and down kerbs or any other specific skill you want to improve.

The course takes place at Leeds University where we will have fully accessible rooms, bathrooms, dining/kitchen areas and lounges.

”Before the course I wouldn’t even go out and now I’ve got more confidence. I’m actually getting out more now, do things like going shopping and going to the football. The course was fun, educational and worthwhile.”

Course Donation

Back Up relies on the generosity of individuals and companies to fund our programme of courses. Each year we ask all course participants to make a suggested donation towards their course place.

We do understand however that everyone’s circumstances are different so making a full donation isn’t always possible. Please don’t ever let money concerns stop you from applying for one of our courses. We never allocate or refuse a course space based on your ability to make a donation.

The following recommended donation is roughly a third of the actual cost of each space:
