Do you have a love of the outdoors? Have you always wanted to try abseiling or canoeing? Then our Multi Activity course may be for you.

”This course enabled me to learn my capabilities and has brought me back to life. It’s the best thing I have done since my injury – I hadn’t belly laughed since my accident but I did on this course. I feel more comfortable with myself and that’s great.”

Donna (47), Lake District participant

All of our residential activity courses are packed full of exciting indoor and outdoor pursuits that enhance confidence and develop practical skills for daily life. The duration of the course will be spent at the Calvert Trust Centre, whose expert instructors adapt a whole range of outdoor activities so that you can participate as independently as possible, whatever your level of injury. You will also have the chance to share experiences and learn from other people with a spinal cord injury.

Course content at both centres includes:

  • Rock and rope activities such as climbing and abseiling
  • Water activities such as kayaking, canoeing and sailing
  • Other activities such as archery, blow darts, and hand cycling
  • Wheelchair skills training
  • A coastal push in Exmoor or a push up a hill in the Lake District
  • The Exmoor courses sometimes include horse riding or carriage driving.

In the evenings, you might have the opportunity to go swimming at one of the centre’s accessible swimming pools, put your newly learned wheelchair skills into practice, or just sit and relax in the lounge and share experiences of the day with fellow group members.

Safety is our top priority on all our courses. We will be adhering to government guidelines, as well as the procedures of the Calvert Trust. We will also have our own Covid safety policies, which will account for the needs of people with a spinal cord injury. We will be keeping a close eye on any Covid developments so please be aware that this information may change.

Course Donation

Back Up relies on the generosity of individuals and companies to fund our programme of courses. Each year we ask all course participants to make a suggested donation towards their course place.

We do understand however that everyone’s circumstances are different so making a full donation isn’t always possible. Please don’t ever let money concerns stop you from applying for one of our courses. We never allocate or refuse a course space based on your ability to make a donation.

The following recommended donations are roughly a third of the actual cost of each space:

Exmoor 5-day: 22 – 26 April  – £600

Lake District 7-day: 18 – 24 May – £900

Exmoor 5-day: 17 – 21 Jun – £600

Lake District – Over 50s – 5-day: 8-12 Jul – £600

Lake District 5-day: 16 – 20 Sep – £600
