FAQs

All of our courses aim to increase confidence and independence in a supportive environment. Back Up’s residential courses are for people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of injury – complete or incomplete, whether you use a wheelchair or walk, there is a course for you.

If you want to make changes in your life whether by meeting new people, learning new skills, adopting a different lifestyle or developing a more positive outlook about the future then we have a course to suit you.

Which course is right for you?

All our courses provide the perfect introduction to managing with a spinal cord injury away from home. The type of course you are interested in will depend on your interests and what you are hoping to achieve.

Check out the courses calendar or find out more about our life-changing courses here.

If you are unsure as to which course is right for you, email us or give us a ring on 020 8875 1805 to chat through the options.

How are course places allocated?

We allocate course places based on the needs of people who apply. We also consider the aim of why the person is applying for our courses. When applying for a course, get across what you think you will get out of the course. The courses team then carefully consider all applications and we allocate spaces based on those we think will gain the most from the course.

How much do the courses cost?

We will ask you to make a donation towards the cost of the course. However, you should not let that affect your decision to make an application. A course place is yours if you need it, regardless of your ability to contribute.  There is a recommended donation on each course page, and on the application form.

Worried about care needs?

Each course will have qualified, fully trained and experienced volunteer nurses and personal assistants for the duration of the course. If you have any concerns before going on the course about care needs please do contact us. We want to make sure you are feeling comfortable prior and during the course in every way possible.

Can I volunteer on courses?

Volunteers are an integral part to our courses and to Back Up in general, and we have a range of different volunteer roles to suit all interests: group leader, care team member, wheelchair skills trainer, or buddy. If you are interested in volunteering with us, then please have a look at our volunteer pages for more information about our different roles and how to apply.
