It is not uncommon for young people to not know what career they want to go into and so feel a little apprehensive about their futures. Throw in a disability and it can feel over-whelming.

We have developed the Your Future, Your Way programme specifically for those with a spinal cord injury and aged between 16 and 24.

Your Future, You Way is a series of webinars hosted on Zoom, covering a range of important subjects and delivered by people who understand what you may be going through. It’s aim is to provide consistent, knowledgeable support for those looking to navigate further education and into employment for the first time.

Individuals, parents and anyone interested in supporting young people with spinal cord injuries can attend as many or as few sessions as they like. Topics to be covered will include:

  • Considerations for your future – 6-8pm on 06 October, Click on this link to register

– This introductory session will set the scene for the rest of the programme. It will explore what is possible and what options are available as well as how to start thinking about your choices for the future. We’ll touch on what the law says around education service provision and employment and how to start advocating for yourself, with the support available through Back Up and others.

  • College or university guidance – 6-8pm on 13 October, Click on this link to register

– There is a lot of support out there for disabled students at colleges and universities; it’s just not always easy knowing how to navigate it. This session will set out what is possible and what support is out there, including through the Disability Students Allowance. Again we will cover how to go about requesting the support you need.

  • Entering work for the first time – 6-8pm on 3 November, Click on this link to register

– Not only do employers have a legal duty to consider adjustments for disabled applicants or employees, they want to put support in place to ensure you can perform to your full potential. This session will explore the types of adjustments you may need, how and when to request what you require, as well as the various support available, including through Access to Work. We will cover the key features of a CV, including how to tailor it to be attractive to recruiters and potential employers. We will also talk about how to position gaps in employment or education history and when, how, or if to position your disability.

  • Nailing interviews – 6-7.30pm on 3 November, Click on this link to register

– Interviews are the mainstay of any recruitment process. They can range from seemingly informal chats to multiple rounds in front of interviewing panels. They are also used by some universities as part of their entry processes. This session will cover some top hints and tips on how to portray your strengths and your authentic self alongside giving you opportunities to practice with mock interviews.

If you are interested, please register via the links for each session, or get in touch with our team at vocation@backuptrust.org.uk or on 020 8875 1805 if you have any questions.
