Impact of Back Up's mentoring service

“…the most valuable aspect was being linked with a mentor with a spinal injury. We were able to ask our mentor a whole multitude of questions, such as, about sexuality, bodily functions and general advice.”

Our mentoring services encourage the use of 5 specific coping strategies which are linked to positive adjustment to injury and better life outcomes.

The coping strategies are:

  • Using emotional and practical support (friends, family etc)
  • Keeping busy, having meaningful activities, getting out and about
  • Acceptance (talking about the situation and accepting the reality of the situation)
  • Active problem solving and goal setting
  • Believing that something good can come out of the situation

In 2011/12 97% of people who were mentored increased in at least 3 of the 5 positive coping strategies.
