How I disclose my disability to an employer?​

When and how to disclose your disability is up to you. There’s no right or wrong approach. What is most important is that you feel comfortable with the information you are sharing, and that you can share it confidently. Being open about your disability does ensure appropriate adjustments are put in place by your current or potential employer.

Here’s a short video with some people with a spinal cord injury who share their experiences of disclosing their disability.

The law is on your side. The Equalities Act states:
“Employers are required to ensure that disabled applicants are not treated less favourably than non-disabled applicants.”

“May need to make reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process to enable a disabled individual to compete and demonstrate their ability to do the job.”

Disability Confident is a government scheme encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. You can find a list of employers who signed up to the disability confident scheme here.
