Become a trustee

“Back Up is an inspirational charity, with a strong and passionate Board. Being a trustee enables me to use my skills to the benefit of Back Up and its work and in return I too develop and learn, equipping me with new skills and experience.”

Back Up Trustee

Back Up Board of trustees come from all walks of life, and are united by their wish to support people affected by spinal cord injury to realise their full potential.

The Board takes big decisions about Back Up’s future in line with the aims and objectives of the organisation. Together, our trustees make sure we are accountable to everyone involved in Back Up’s work and that what we do is within the law.

What we need from potential trustees

Being a Back Up trustee is a rewarding, and even fun, opportunity to make a difference while learning new skills. You will need to prepare for and attend our quarterly board meetings each year and potentially take part in committee meetings which are often held by telephone. We will provide a full induction so you feel confident that you can carry out the responsibilities of the role.

This would suit you if you are able to think strategically, creatively and for the long-term; have time and energy and a strong commitment to Back Up’s aims and values; and excellent interpersonal skills.

Support and training for trustees

  • Full induction to help you understand and carry out your role as trustee
  • Reading, discussions, meetings and events as well as other development opportunities
  • Support, guidance and feedback from the Chair, Chief Executive and other trustees
  • Agreed expenses can be covered
