Wellspect employee volunteers at Belfast City Skills course

Wellspect Healthcare first supported Back Up over 10 years ago and this year their focus has been on our range of life skills courses. Like Wellspect, Back Up is passionate about helping people with spinal cord injury get off to a good start and our services have a long-term impact. These courses give people the confidence they need to lead a more independent and active life.

Last month, Sophie Tandy, one of Wellspect's Customer Service Advisors, took on the challenge of volunteering on Back Up's
City Skills course in Belfast.

During the course, Sophie and other volunteers supported people with spinal cord injury to improve their everyday skills, such as getting around the city and using public transport.

"I hope that my role as buddy on the course has helped to motivate the participants to achieve their goals,” Sophie said. “My perception of disability has changed massively. It has helped to show me that even with a high level injury people still want to be and can be as independent as possible."

One of the spinal cord injured participants summed up her experience: “When I got back from the course my partner said I seemed like a different person, brimming with confidence and enthusiasm. Finally being taught how to do things properly is more welcome than I can describe. I expected that I would learn some new skills but was amazed by what fun it turned out to be.”

Wellspect also supports Back Up's Skills for Independence and Moving Forwards courses.
