Volunteers benefit from motivational interviewing

Andy and Pete

This month a number of Back Up staff and volunteers went on a Motivational Interviewing course run by trainer and consultant, Majella Greene who has been doing great work with Back Up for over a year.

Motivational Interviewing is a method of strengthening a person's own motivation and commitment to change through focused and goal-directed  conversation.

Our volunteers offer support across all of our services, including peer mentoring and schools and family inclusion and this training has been invaluable for the one-to-one peer support they give  to people affected by spinal cord injury.

Pete, one of our family mentors said;

“It was inspirational. It made so much sense and I learnt a lot which I’ve been able to put it into practice in my role as a mentor.”
