Congratulations to our volunteer of the year Nicole, who was presented with the award at this years HMS Back Up Ball. This award is presented to a volunteer who has shown a particular commitment through time, enthusiasm and energy to the charity.
Nicole has played a vital role across all of Back Up’s activities in the past 12 months. She first got involved with Back Up in 2011, as a family mentor, following her partner’s spinal cord injury. As a mentor, Nicole has supported many people who are struggling to adjust to their partner’s spinal cord injury. Mentees have praised her for her encouragement and understanding. By sharing her own experience Nicole has helped other people to adapt and face the future with optimism.
Volunteering as a buddy for the first time on a multi activity course in April 2014, Nicole was praised for their enthusiasm and positivity, experiencing the ‘Back Up magic’ which she had heard so much about from her partner’s involvement. Nicole also regularly attends relative’s days at Stoke Mandeville as a face of Back Up, helping families to see that life with spinal cord injury can be lived to the full.
She has been a tireless fundraiser, shaking collection buckets and speaking at a golf day to raise money. And not least, was instrumental in Back Up being voted as charity of the year by her employers, law firm Withers LLP.
Whether she’s rowing in a dragon boat team, championing Back Up’s work, or providing support to people in need, Nicole is always enthusiastic, dedicated and inspirational. We can’t think of anyone more representative of Back Up’s values! Huge thanks and well done to Nicole.
Back Up’s work is reliant on hundreds of amazing volunteers. If you have been inspired by Nicole’s story and would like to get involved, visit the dedicated webpage
