Ski Kart Taster

September 2010

Bracknell

The Ski Kart Assessment Day is primarily designed for tetraplegics who would like to have

a go at skiing. It is generally recommended that you are a minimum of one year post injury

before skiing.

The aim of the day is to introduce potential

skiers to the equipment and techniques of

kart skiing, simulated on a dry slope.  This

gives us the chance to assess your skiing

ability and suitability for our winter

ski programme.  You will also have

the opportunity to speak to previous course participants and ask any questions that you may have about skiing.

The day will be held at the John Nike Leisure Sports complex in Bracknell. Assessment slots will last approximately one hour and you will be sent further details and your allocated slot prior to the day.

Places on the winter ski programme are limited and are always in demand. This assessment day is an integral part of our ski selection process, therefore we highly recommend that applicants for the Sweden courses attend if at all possible.

Ski testimonial from a former ski course participant

"Before I had my injury life was pretty good for me. I was a bricklayer and also had a 14-months-old son.

Every year, friends from my local pub would go on holiday to Ibiza, so I thought I would join them.  In 2006, on the 24th of July, we flew out and arrived at about midnight. We all decided to go out for a few drinks and the next thing I can recall was waking up in hospital.  I had broken my neck at the C6/C7 vertebra.  I suffered breathing difficulties as I had caught pneumonia too.

During my rehab the main thing was to try and get me breathing independently which I achieved with the help of the doctors and nurses.  Then the hard work began when I started going to the gym. The first few weeks were the worst as I had been bed ridden for so long and had lost five stone. I was very weak at first but eventually my hard work started paying off and I was able to get out on my own.

Seven months after I arrived at Southport SU, I was ready to be discharged. I found out about the Sweden trip from a nurse on the unit who had previously been as a carer and I thought it sounded like fun.  I didn't really know what to expect from the trip but was looking forward to it as I had heard it was really good. The first day was learning how to stop and turn and it was when we started to get to know one another that I started to really enjoy myself.

I didn't really think there was much out there for disabled people to do activity wise.  Going on this trip made me realise that you can still have fun - you just have to work around your injury.  I would recommend the skiing trip to everyone.  I had a great time and would jump at the chance to go again."
