Alice Peterson, world renowned author has written a love story with Cass, who sustains a spinal cord injury at the heart of her book. The main character is based on Sarah Orr, a volunteer and ex-staff member running Back Ups courses around 2002.
In By My Side, Alice writes about the difference our ski course has on Cass to help build her confidence following her spinal cord injury, just like it was for Sarah. Sarah says;
“After my injury, it took me a long while to get in touch with the Back Up office. I didn’t want to know other people in wheelchairs, or be a part of some sort of disabled group. I was coping day-to-day, back at high school for my final year, and that was hard enough. But, when I did get in touch, I started to realise that I might be able to do something adventurous again. The multi-activity week in the Lake District was a real eye opener in terms of what could be possible and I met some incredible role models. The ski trip really turned my life around. I had a ridiculous amount of fun, challenged myself on the slopes and learned new skills – including that sit-skiing is equally as difficult, and fun, as stand up skiing had been! I met a fantastic bunch of people who remain my friends today. Without Back Up I don’t think I would have the active and full life I have now.”
