Water Ski

Water-Skiing is a sport many people may not have even considered before their injury.  People often surprise themselves with how much they enjoy both the social and active elements of the course.  The water-skiing course introduces spinally injured participants to an exciting and active sport and will get you skiing as independently as possible.

“The whole group and set-up was great and everyone is encouraged to do their best without any of it feeling like it’s a competition. Each evening, when the water-skiing had ended, we would have dinner, relax in the social room and have time to watch videos of ourselves, which helped us to see how we could improve our technique for the next day”. The British Disabled Water Ski Association

Back-Up has been running courses at Heron Lake, Middlesex, in conjunction with the British Disabled Water Ski Assoc (BDWA) for many years. It is ideally situated just off Junction 13 on the M25 or a 10 minute taxi ride from Staines Station with excellent accessible facilities.

The course is made up of 14 participants, led by 2 Back-Up Group Leaders. Able-bodied volunteers and spinally injured participants as well as carers/nurses make up the remaining numbers.

No one needs prior knowledge of the sport. The aim of each course is to get everyone (including volunteers) to ski as independently as possible.

Although it is not advised for participants of injury level C6/7 complete or above it does depend on the individual so contact the Back-Up Office for more details: 020 8875 1805 or

”No question about it, the course was brilliant and everyone should have the opportunity. I know I have gained in confidence from it, in terms of meeting new people and getting over feeling self-conscious about being in a chair”.SCI Participant
