Summer Multi-activity courses

Read Sharon Essam's story of an Exmoor weekend course here.

Back-Up multi-activity weeks are designed to show both spinally injured and able bodied volunteers just what can be achieved. The weeks provide peer support where tips and skills are shared and can be applied back home or in the work place. You’ll also make new friendships by the end of the week…

‘It was great to be part of such a good team and to see people really surprising themselves with what is possible.” Medical Professional

The multi-activity course is our most popular event. Every day offers something new from a long list of activities, including sailing, canoeing, blokarting, hiking, cycling, abseiling, and camping. For each individual participant there is always an activity they find they really enjoy and will continue. You’ll make some great friends who are all in the same boat as you. The normal numbers for this course are 8 SCI participants and 2 medical professionals/carers and 6 volunteers.

“Reminded me to have fun! The river trip was one of the best experiences of my life. Great group of people - enjoyed their company and friendship. The Back-Up Trust formula really does work. I should have become involved with back up years ago.” Mr J. Mansfield, T4

The Calvert Trust, Keswick

Four weeks of courses are run through out the summer months. This centre caters for 16 participants at anyone time (8 spinally injured/8 able bodied) and led by 2 Back-up Group Leaders.

The Keswick Centre is fully accessible and situated in a beautiful environment over looking Lake Bassenthwaite. The centre is a short taxi ride from Penrith Station or 30 minutes from Junction 40 on M6. The course runs Saturday to Saturday.

“My confidence has grown with the belief that anything is possible. I have gained a huge amount of confidence and increased physical ability. I got the most out of seeing just what extremes can be achieved with a little help and encouragement. I think that Back-Up courses should be seen as a vital part of rehab both physically and mentally and should not be missed by anyone.” Kevin Broadhead, C4

The Calvert Trust, Exmoor

Three weeks and a weekend course will be run at Calvert Trust Exmoor this summer. The fully accessible centre is based on the edge of stunning Exmoor National Park. This centre caters for 16 participants at anyone time (8 spinally injured/8 able bodied) and led by 2 Back-Up Group Leaders. The centre is 2 hours from Bristol and can be reached from Junction 27 off the M5.

“The course far exceeded my expectations and has left me more relaxed about life. I used to worry a lot about day-to-day things like going to new restaurants or bars in case they didn’t have wheelchair access, so I’d always ring up before hand to check. Since coming back, I don’t do that anymore I just go. After spending a week clambering in and out of canoes and abseiling down huge drops, the day to day stuff doesn’t seem to worry me anymore. It’s like I’ve made a years progress within a week.” Brod Hart T8
