Last week saw the 30th annual Guttmann conference
take place in London, this year organised by Stanmore spinal unit which included both medical and rehabilitation presentations
. It was attended by health professionals from all over the UK, as well as representatives from spinal cord charities.
Three members of our team, Andy, Justin and Pete went to the conference and set up an information stand to promote Back Up services
among medical professionals from around the country. It was a fantastic opportunity to reach new people and tell them about our outreach and support, courses, mentoring and wheelchair skills that we offer. With a lot of people registering interest with us it means we are able to reach even more people affected by spinal cord injury.
There were a lot of interesting presentations at the conference looking at the rehabilitation of people post spinal cord injury and the benefits of having access to garden areas
when in the spinal unit. Belfast spinal unit have built a garden at the centre for use in therapeutic purposes, including gardening activities. They've had great feedback from patients at the unit who really enjoy the time they spend there.
If gardening activities is something that you think you’d like then you may be interested in our new art, craft and horticulture course
starting next year. Keep an eye on our “courses calendar
” or give the office a call on 02088751805 to register your interest.
