#GivingTuesday: Help young people who are paralysed

What’s #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving on December 1st. After the sales of Black Friday and the online shopping boom on Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give.

Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering your time or just spreading the word about Back Up at the start of the Christmas shopping season, #GivingTuesday is a call to action for everyone who wants to support people affected by spinal cord injury.

Why support Back Up this #GivingTuesday?

This year, our #GivingTuesday campaign focuses on children and young people affected by spinal cord injury. Every year 40-50 children in the UK will become paralysed through accident or illness.

Back Up is the only UK charity with dedicated services for children and young people who are paralysed. Our services include mentoring, residential activity courses and wheelchair skills. We also run sessions at schools to raise awareness about disability and create more understanding for children and young people returning to school after their injury.

Your donation this #GivingTuesday can support young people like Ashleigh

In 2012, Ashleigh’s life changed forever when a horse riding accident left her permanently paralysed from the waist down. After the injury, she went through depression, attempted suicide and self harmed.

She first heard about Back Up in hospital and decided to go on a Back Up residential course. The course helped Ashleigh to face her fear and she got back on a horse. When she got home, her mum said it felt like the old Ashleigh was back. Since being involved with Back Up, Ashleigh has trained as a young wheelchair skills trainer and supports other young people in a similar situation.

Three years down the line and Ashleigh’s life feels normal again. She studies law in college, plays wheelchair basketball and hopes to travel the world. “So many things have come out of a bad situation and Back Up has been instrumental in making it happen. I genuinely don’t think I would be here without the support they gave me,” Ashleigh said.
