Carers and nurses are an essential part of all the Back-Up courses, to ensure that those who require help with their personal care can access the opportunities we offer and you help maintain the high standards people expect on all our courses. People with spinal cord training will either take on a carer or a buddy role depending on their skills.

“The trip was excellent, well organised and a lot of fun. I got a tremendous amount out of it and am passing on the experience to patients and staff.” Julie, Carer

The carers are linked one to one with individuals who require personal care assistance. The buddies provide more support when out on activities. Neither role requires any experience of outdoor activities, (except for the ski courses where buddies do need to be competent skiers), but both carers and buddies take a full and active part in the activities.

As a medical professional Back-Up offers you innumerable learning opportunities including a unique and fun way to achieve continuing professional development requirements e.g. Nursing PREP, Chartered Society of PT’s, College of OT’s. As an important member of the group we ensure the course is as positive and inspirational for you as for the spinally injured participants you are providing care to.

“It was great to be part of such a good team and to see people really surprising themselves with what is possible.” Ruth, spinal nurse

Medical professionals and people with spinal training are a necessity to our work. Therefore we are committed to fully funding the costs of your course place. As a Back-Up course can contribute towards continuing professional development, your employer may help with partial funding and/ or study leave. Should you wish to make a donation you will ensure more people with spinal cord injury can benefit in the future.
