How we support our runners:
2008 The Asics British 10K team
We had 10 runners who ran for Back-Up this July. Check out a few of them here; who they are and why they ran for Back-Up:
I am Samantha Byles, and work in the Back-Up office as the Youth Project Co-ordinator. I have been working with Back-Up for just over a year and get to see firsthand how Back-Up’s work changes people’s lives. I couldn’t imagine running for anyone else! I have done a few runs before but my biggest achievement is the Great South Run which I completed in 2006. Despite cold, windy and very wet conditions it was the most fantastic day! The atmosphere created by the runners and supporters was brilliant- it carries you along. I am confident that the British 10k will bring a similar experience. I will be guiding novice runner Becky round the course- I just hope I’ve done enough to keep up with her!
I am Becky and I am the Events and Individuals Fundraiser for The Back-Up Trust. I have worked for Back-Up for a year and have seen firsthand the positive impact our services can have. I have however recently moved to the fundraising team and I figured the best way for me to see how I can support our fundraisers is to do some fundraising myself. As I am not a runner the race is going to be a real challenge but knowing the money I will be raising is going to such a great cause makes the hard work worth it.
Running for Back-Up will prove to be no mean feat! But hearing how Back-Up makes a difference to people who with out their help would never have access to sporting activities like skiing, water skiing, scuba diving is something I can really relate to. The sport itself is just one part - it builds confidence, friendships and makes me feel happier! I know how much sport means to me in my life … but could I do it paralysed? Probably not on my own, and that's why Back-Up is so important. I'm proud to run for Back-Up.

Hi, I'm Helen, also known as little sister of Louise Wright. Since Lou has been with the Back-Up Trust I've helped out at a few events and I've seen the difference that this charity makes so it will be an honour to participate. I've decided on the British 10k run because (1) I was too scared to join the Marathon and (2) I love exercise. I teach fitness classes most days and feel that it's about time that I put my fitness to the test. I'm not the best or the fastest runner but I will get round that course with the aim of trying to raise as much money as I can.

Hi, my name’s Julia. I’ve heard all about the important work that the Back Up Trust does through my friend and housemate Becky, who works in the fundraising team. It’s such a worthwhile cause, and really helps to change lives. So I feel proud that I can try and do something to contribute and help to make a difference. I have never taken part in an event like this, and the training is hard work, but I’m sure it will be worth it for the experience on the day, and of course for all the money raised!
I'm 27, and currently work as a trainee solicitor at Beachcroft LLP in London.
My competitive running experience consists of the glory of finishing first in the 200m at a school sports day a rather long time ago - cross country runs were feared and loathed. This year I went to watch a couple of friends run in the marathon, and I was inspired to the degree that I thought I would like to put myself through the regular pain of long distance runs again. My sister Penny has recently been involved with Back-Up, and is running the British 10k this year too. If I don't beat her, I will never hear the end of it. My girlfriend is also a Back-Up volunteer so when I heard from both of them about the excellent work that Back-Up provides first hand, choosing a charity to run for was easy.
I am Penny Loades, currently a carer for a client with Active Assistance, whom I have been with for 9 months now. I went as a carer on the Sweden ski course in January this year; had a brilliant brilliant time and want to raise lots of money so more people and more courses take place like this one!
I think people with spinal injuries should have the opportunity to experience as many similar activities as possible to able-bodied and Back-Up can help! To be able to hurtle down a snowy mountain, to see the top of Snowden, to engage in water sports and many many more shouldn't be restricted to able-bodied people - fantastic charity!!
