Last Friday was the 5th annual Luton and Bedfordshire community awards, celebrating the achievements of local people. Power chair skills trainer Richard Spencer was nominated by Back Up as Volunteer of the Year for his tireless efforts in teaching wheelchair skills in spinal centres and on courses teaching people new skills and building their confidence.
Pete Donnelly, Outreach and Support Manager says “Richard is a fantastic power chair skills trainer, bringing over 30 years of experience and that really is invaluable when it comes to supporting others. His empathetic nature means he can connect with people really well and they can definitely relate to him. Richard travels across the country to teach skills at spinal centres and courses as well helping to transform lives.”
On the night, Richard turned up in his suave suit with his family and brimming with excitement. Richard’s efforts volunteering with Back Up were duly recognised as he picked up the award for Volunteer of the Year. Well done Richard and thank you for all your support!
