Volunteering as a mentor

"If sharing something as difficult as what I’ve been through can help someone else, then it wasn’t all for nothing. The feeling I get from mentoring people is better than anything you could experience with a nine to five job."

"Becoming a mentor has been a completely positive experience. The realisation that I have the ability to make a difference to somebody’s life is quite overwhelming. ”

The Back Up mentoring service, accredited by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation and supported by Harris Cartier LLP, enables people who have been affected by spinal cord injury to receive support from others who have ‘been there’. Trained volunteer mentors, who either have a spinal cord injury or are a parent or partner of someone with a spinal cord injury, support mentees to overcome their challenges and lead a positive life.

What does it involve?

  • Providing confidential telephone or face to face support to one or two mentees
  • Supporting each mentee for approximately 10 sessions
  • Using problem solving techniques to enable mentees to work through their challenges
  • Having experience of spinal cord injury, being a good listener, compassionate, and non-judgemental

Support and training

  • Initial training weekend and annual development day
  • Support, guidance and feedback from trained professionals and experienced mentors
  • Accreditation process to acknowledge your developing skills and experience in the role
  • Agreed expenses covered by Back Up
